-Marmots (Mongolian tarvaga, Bobac or Steppe Marmot, Marmota bobac) are clear enough — they are bigger than anything else, almost wombat-sized. Our local Mongolian guide called smaller burrowing mammals we saw either "Mongolian hamsters" (zuram) or long-tailed souslik (gozooroi zuram), and the drivers mentioned a bozlog (smaller than a zuram) found in the south.
-Antelopes of this small, non-migratory subspecies survive in Gobi area.
-Mongolian rodents as jerboas (*you can see them by driving or hiking at night in dry grasslands and deserts), and the large species locally called alagdaaga (Allactaga, Allactagulus), and smaller emuranch (Scirtopoda, Dipus) are easy to find, but tiny daahai (Cardiocranius, Salpingotus) are shy and difficult to see.
-Yolyn Am is a beautiful canyon (part of Gurvasaikhan National Park) and a good place to see for photographing rare Gobi sheep (Ovis ammon darwini), and many other interesting animals and plants. Nesting birds include wallcreeper (Trichodroma muraria) and cinereous vulture (Torgos monachus), locally known as condor.
-Regionally endangered rare birds species such as White-naped Crane (Grus vipio), Siberian Crane (Grus leucogeranus), Hooded Crane (Grus monacha), Pied Harrier (Circus melanoleucos), Great Bustard (Otus tarda), Eurasian Black or Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), Dalmation Pelican (Pelicanus crispus), Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), Relict Gull (Larus relictus), Swan Goose (Cygnopsis cygnoides), and Bearded Vulture or Lammergeyer (Gypaetus barbatus).
-Two nocturnal species of lizards are also rare, but diurnal ones are abundant in Gobi in summer.
-Of all the large animals in Gobi, two are particularly difficult to find: mazaalai, or Gobi bear (Mazalai, Gobi’s brown bear or Ursus arctos ssp.), and havtgai, or wild camel (Camelus bactrianus). There are only 20-40 bears left in Gobi.
-The Mongolian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus hemionus, also called Khulan) is a subspecies of the Onager. It may be synonymous with the Gobi Kulan or Dziggetai (Equus hemionus luteus).
-Przewalski horses have become extinct in the wild only recently, in the second half of the twentieth century. Happily, some horses did survive is zoo's. After careful preparation and breeding the reintroduction of the Przewalski horses is made in the nineties in several Mongolian Nature Reserves. Up till now, only the reintroduction in the Hustain Nuruu Reserve seems to have been successful.
